Welcome to our Activity Days Blog!

We are so excited to be your leaders and look forward to getting to know each of you even better! We thought it would be fun to create a blog that you can visit anytime you want and share with your family and friends all of the fun and exciting things we will be doing in Activity Days! This blog will also be a fun way to help us keep track of the activities we have done and the progress we have made in the Faith in God program.

We hope you and your families will enjoy using this blog to keep you informed of activities coming up as well and sharing what we have been able to do together in Activity Days.

Please feel free to post comments or call us at anytime!

Thank You Cards and Cookies

The girls wrote some Thank You Cards for the Bishopric and the Primary Presidency. They put together plates of cookies and took them around to the different members of the Bishopric and Primary Presidency. It was fun to see the smiles on the girls faces as they were giving a bit of service to others!

Chemical Change and T-Shirts

This was an awesome activity! The girls put letters or objects on a black T-shirt and sprayed it with bleach. They took the letters or objects off and let the bleach react with the shirt to permanently change the color, making it loose color. When the girls had the lighter color they wanted then they sprayed it with white vinegar. The white vinegar stops the bleach from reacting anymore. It is a chemical change...it is SCIENCE!!!!!!
The girls either took home their shirts after we rinsed them or I brought them around to them the next day. The shirts turned out well.
We were glad to have the Cotton Manner Ward Activity Day Girls join us for the fun. Thanks for coming!
If you want to do this at home, then make sure you follow the instructions above in bold or contact Sister Cheesman for more help or spray bottles. *For the best results make sure your shirt is washed before you do it and make sure to take the objects or letters off the shirt right after you spray on the bleach, that way the bleach does not go through the paper onto the shirt. Remember, you don't have to have new shirts, they can be old worn shirts that you recycle and make into new shirts!

Science with SOUND and FIRE

We learned about sound waves on November 11th in Sister Cheesman's classroom at PVMS. We heard music and saw how it effected a flame tube that would go up and down, showing us amplitude. The girls played chimes to see the difference in the pitch of a sound wave with a long or short medium. The long chimes have a longer medium for the sound waves to travel through, so the pitch is lower. The short chimes have a smaller medium to the sound waves to travel through, so the pitch is higher.

Spinach Brownies

We learned a little about fiber and the advantage of putting spinach in our brownies to make our yummy treat a little healthier. The girls helped make the mix.
The brownies looked pretty interesting with the spinach added.
All the girls also wrote down the recipe to put in their Activity Days binder. In case they lost it or can't read it, here it is.
Spinach Brownies
Ingredients:
  • A box of Low Fat Brownie Mix
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 1/2 cup of frozen spinach
  • 1 tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 1 whole egg or 2 egg whites
Procedure:
1. Place the water, oil, eggs and spinach in a blender and blend until smooth.
2. Pour the mixture in with powdered Brownie Mix and stir until all mixed together.
3. Add nuts or peppermint oil (just a small drop) and mix together.
4. Pour the mixture in a well greased pan.
5. Add any fun treats to the top like marshmellows, M&Ms, chocolate chips, nuts, etc.
6. Cook according to the instructions on the box.
7. Eat and ENJOY!!!!
Don't they look yummy?!!!!!!!
The girls were all happy that the brownies tasted so good! You can't even taste the spinach in them. Try them at home with your family!

Table settings and Raclette Dinner

The girls learned how to set the table. They received a handout to put into their binders to help remind them how to set the table and use good manners at the table. This picture is an example of how to set a place at a table.
After the girls had their place set at the table they enjoyed a green salad and then they learned about and ate a meal called Raclette. They also received a handout about the Raclette so they can do it at home with their families. This meal uses a lot of cheese and a special grill, like the one in the picture, but can be done with a regular electric grill at your table. This meal is a very social meal since you grill your food at the table and visit while your food is cooking.
You can grill just about anything you want. The girls grilled sausage and bacon. You steam potatos and put melted cheese on them to go with the meats and veggies you have grilled.
You also eat many pickled things like onions, peppers and pickels with the meal to help break down the cheese in your stomach. Black olives and green olives are also very tasty.
The girls were excellent cooks! They worked together really well and had a great time!

Sacrament Books

The girls made Sacrament Books. This is the second goal under "Spirituality" the girls have passed off this month.
This is a great book for the girls to be looking at during the Sacrament. Inside it has the prayer for the bread and water, pictures of Christ and some of the Sacrament Hymns. There is a page for the girls to write their testimonies on so they have it to read. We will be adding Mormon Ads to it in the near future.

The girls did a great job on their books!

The Word of Wisdom Treasure Hunt

Sister Benson set up a fun treasure hunt around her home to help the girls learn more about the Word of Wisdom. The girls were to find the clues at each step of the map to find the treasure! This is the map they followed.
Sister Benson dressed the part as a pirate and she looks great!
The girls wrote down their information as they collected it.
When they found a clue, Sister Benson would read the scripture
Clue #1 was about receiving a physical body.
This clue was about taking care of our bodies and getting enough rest.
This clue was about not using drugs, including alcohol and tobacco.
This clue was about eating healthy foods for our bodies, like fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
This next clue was about eating meat in moderation.
This last clue tells us that we will have the treasure of having a healthy body if we take care of it.
Here the girls are with their treasure box and some yummy treasures inside it.
Our pirate treasure hunters learned a lot about the Word of Wisdom and had a great time!
